Russian Geological Research Institute (VSEGEI) is a leading institution of the Federal Subsoil Resources Management Agency (Rosnedra) in the field of regional geological exploration. Its main activities include state geological mapping of the Russian Federation and its adjacent water areas, creation of a state network of base geological and geophysical lines, parametric and superdeep wells, scientific and technical support for geological exploration, scientific, thematic and experimental-methodical studies.
VSEGEI is the successor of the first state geological institution in Russia, the Geological Committee (GeolCom), established in St. Petersburg on January 31, 1882 by decree of Emperor Alexander III entrusting it with studying of the geological structure of Russia and dealing with practical difficulties in assessing the country's mineral potential.
VSEGEI bears the name of Alexander Karpinsky, who headed GeolCom for over eighteen years and was the first elected President of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1917-1936.
Throughout its history, the Institute has successfully solved the tasks of geological exploration, developing and carrying on scientific traditions in regional geology, geological mapping, metallogeny, paleontology and stratigraphy. Such scientists as F.N. Chernyshev, I.V. Mushketov, A.A. Borisyak, K.I. Bogdanovich, V.A. Obruchev, Yu.A. Bilibin, I.I. Gorsky, E.O. Pogrebitsky, N.G. Cassin, D.L. Nalivkin, I.M. Pokrovskaya, L.S. Librovich, Yu.Ir. Polovinkina and many others recognized not only in our country, but also abroad worked their way through the walls of VSEGEI.
Employees of GeolCom-VSEGEI made scientifically based forecasts and first descriptions for over 600 deposits in ore regions and provinces on four continents of the Earth. 48 employees of the institute received the sign “Discoverer of Mineral Deposit”.
At present, VSEGEI organizes and carries out state geological mapping of the Russian Federation and its continental shelf at 1: 200,000, 1: 1,000,000, 1: 2 500,000, 1: 5,000,000 scales. Every year, more than 40 field units work in various regions of Russia.
Today, VSEGEI’s staff includes 2 Corresponding Members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 38 doctors and 160 candidates of sciences. The Institute possesses scientific, methodological and laboratory-analytical units, highly qualified and experienced specialists in all areas. Much attention is paid to involving young people into scientific and production activities; postgraduate students are trained in 8 specialties.
VSEGEI actively participates in Rosnedra's international cooperation with geological surveys of foreign countries, coordinates several international projects (“Atlas of Geological Maps of Northern, Central and Eastern Asia at 1: 2,5 M scale”, “Atlas of Geological Maps of the Circumpolar Arctic at 1: 5 M scale”, etc.).
VSEGEI represents Russia in the Commission for the Geological Map of the World under UNESCO and in the UNESCO International Program for Geosciences and Geoparks, takes an active part in the work of the Intergovernmental Council of the CIS Countries for Exploration, Use, and Protection of Mineral Resources.
