VSEGEI held a joint meeting of the leaders and members of the Executive Committee of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) and the National Committee of Russian Geologists

22 October 2019, A.P. Karpinsky Russian Geological Research Institute (VSEGEI) held a joint meeting of the leaders and members of the Executive Committee of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) (President – Prof. Qiuming Cheng) and the National Committee of Russian Geologists (Chair – Acad. M.A. Fedonkin). The main purpose of the meeting was to discuss promising areas of cooperation, as well as consultations on the preparation and submission of Russia’s bid for the right to host the 38th Session of the International Geological Congress (IGC) in 2028 in St. Petersburg.
In the morning of 22 October, a meeting of the National Committee of Russian Geologists was held with the participation of representatives from the St. Petersburg Mining University, St. Petersburg State University, Russian Geographical Society, Russian Mineralogical Society, Government of St. Petersburg, Geological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, V.S. Sobolev Institute of Geology and Mineralogy of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Geophysical Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Institute for the Integrated Development of Mineral Resources of the Russian Academy of Sciences, VSEGEI, VNIIokeangeologia.
In accordance with the decree of the Government of the Russian Federation AG-P9-8413 dated 01.10.2019, meeting participants discussed the materials of the preliminary bid and proposals for its finalizing regarding the scientific and excursion program for the 38th Session of the IGC with the involvement of territorial institutions of the Russian Academy of Sciences and mineral developing companies working in various regions of Russia.
Preliminary bid prepared by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Russia, Rosnedra, VSEGEI, and the National Committee of Russian Geologists, in accordance with the regulations, was submitted by the National Committee of Russian Geologists for consideration by IUGS in August 2019.
In the afternoon, a joint meeting of the leaders and members of the Executive Committee of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) and the National Committee of Russian Geologists took place. IUGS President Prof. Qiuming Cheng and Chairman of the National Committee of Russian Geologists Acad. M.A. Fedonkin exchanged views on the current state and prospects for the cooperation development between the two organizations.
Presentations on the preparation and submission of the Russian bid for the right to host the 38th Session of the IGC in 2028 in St. Petersburg was made by Dr. Oleg Petrov, FGBU “VSEGEI” Director General, member of the Bureau of the National Committee of Russian Geologists. The speaker noted that the proposed motto of the 38th International Geological Congress, “Geology without limits”, will reflect the main task of this Congress, deepening of international cooperation in the field of basic and applied Earth sciences.
Also Dr. Petrov noted that Russia is actively involved in many international scientific projects, which are supervised and supported by the International Union of Geological Sciences. These are primarily projects of the International Geoscience Program (IGCP), in 19 of which representatives of industry, university and academic science are currently participating. Russia is also involved in a number of large international mapping projects implemented under the auspices of UNESCO Commission for the Geological Map of the World. These projects are the basis for the integration of scientific, informational, and mineral resources of the World and make a decisive contribution to the development of world geological science and culture.
All these projects are reflected in the scientific program of the 38th IGC, which is traditionally proposed to be formed in four main areas of geosciences. These are “Fundamental geoscience”, “Geology and society”, “Geosciences and mineral resources”, “Applied geosciences”. It is also planned to include in the Congress scientific program sections in such actively developing areas as Environmental Protection and Geoparks.
At present, letters of support for the Russian bid for the right to host the 38th Session of the International Geological Congress (IGC) in 2028 have been received from the geological surveys of the Republic of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, Expoforum Convention and Exhibition Centre. The issue of involving the Scandinavian countries' geological surveys in the excursion program formation is being worked out.
During the discussion of the preliminary bid, members of the Executive Committee of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) made a number of suggestions for improving and supplementing the bid sections. All comments are conveyed to work and will be considered in the final bid, which must be submitted to the IUGS by 30 November 2019.
